Capable of punkish rawness, simmering atmosphere, and light-hearted pop, Modest Mouse helped shape the sound of late-’90s indie rock and proved there’s more to the Pacific Northwest underground than grunge. Coupled with frontman Isaac Brock’s sketches of small-town life, their mix of emo, folk, post-rock, and prog have earned them multi-platinum status and a GRAMMY nomination. The band’s major-label debut, 2000’s sprawling The Moon and Antarctica, showed just how grandly ambitious their music could be, while 2005’s Good News for People Who Love Bad News and its smash hit “Float On” revealed their flair for anthemic pop singles. Having earned their reputation as one of the most consistent live acts touring today, Modest Mouse continues to experiment, infusing arena-sized proportions into their music without sacrificing their signature idiosyncratic outlook.
