Formed in Collingwood Ontario in 2019, Moondoggy got their start playing house parties and making bedroom recordings of their earliest songs. As of 2020, the band would relocate to Toronto where they would spend the next three years honing their live performance, and maturing into the band you see today. Consisting of brothers Jakob Matanowitsch (vocals), and Ben Matanowitsch (saxophone/acoustic guitar), alongside members Jonny Contini (lead guitar), and Victor Carrillo (drums), the band has cultivated an imagery and sound that is glued together by years of development as a group.
On November 17, 2023, Moondoggy released their first studio album, Mad and Noisy. The album is inspired by life between Toronto’s smoggy skyline, Canada’s capital city, and the Hamlet of Dunedin where the Mad and Noisy Rivers meet. Recorded at Toronto’s Dreamhouse Studios alongside producer/engineer, Calvin Hartwick, their debut album delivers a raw sound heald together by careful arrangement and songwriting. Since the release of Mad and Noisy, Moondoggy has begun recording their second studio album, Field Notes at Hamilton’s Catherine North Studios with plans to release the full length album in the fall of 2024.
With sold out shows in Toronto at legendary bars like the Horseshoe Tavern and Lee’s Palace, DIY shows in the band’s hometown of Collingwood with over 300 attendees, and packed out campus performances at Montreal’s McGill University, Moondoggy has developed a live show that is memorable and energetic. The band’s online presence has begun to grow steadily since the release of their debut album, with over 15,000 new monthly listeners on Spotify, and placements on Spotify editorial playlists such as, “All New Rock”, “Ready to Rock”, and “Fresh Finds Canada”.
